Ink Trickster
Appearance
Tall, slim, and slightly too long in the limbs, Lucan always looks as though he arrived from somewhere else five minutes ago. Dark brown hair perpetually falls into his face; a neatly shaved chin frames a sharp nose and tired dark-ringed eyes that miss nothing. His ears are only slightly pointed — enough to mark him as other, not enough to explain him fully. He wears a dark plum or indigo waistcoat over a white shirt with sleeves rolled to the elbow, simple dark trousers, and worn boots. His fingers and cuffs are perpetually stained with ink. He carries a weathered leather satchel stuffed with notebooks and quills.
Abilities
- ◆Scriptmancy — ink flows from his fingers into the quill automatically, recording words and impression sketches in real time
- ◆Glyph-stored memories — mnemonic scripting that preserves moments with precision
- ◆Journal resonance — edges glow red when recording events of particular significance
- ◆Voice for the crowd — persuasive headlines and narrative framing at a city scale
- ◆Network of informants — ears in places most people don't know exist
Costs & Stakes
Overuse of scriptmancy stains the veins of his hands with dark lines and brings on migraines and insomnia — the magic exacts a physical toll that accumulates. His tendency to twist or withhold stories risks burning the informants who trust him. Several powerful people in Elyndor would pay well to either own him or silence him. And his half-elf heritage means he belongs fully to neither world — a useful position for a journalist, and a lonely one for a person.
“All right then. Let's see how this all falls apart.”
Tome I → Tome II Arc
Lucan enters Tome I as a hungry gossip-hunter, chasing the Guardian story because it will make his career. What he encounters forces a slower reckoning. By the end he has become an uneasy witness — not to a story, but to a person. In Tome II he has to decide what he actually believes: that what he publishes can protect Astrylis, or hand it to the wrong people.
